Volkswagen Service History FAQs

How can I get a Volkswagen’s service history?

Ask a Volkswagen retailer to print it. Volkswagen says the retailer has access where the car was serviced inside the Volkswagen network, and will print the history on request. From May 2017, Volkswagen stopped issuing physical service books and records services digitally. A registration check on this page does not open that retailer file.

Can an independent repairer update Volkswagen service records?

Yes. Volkswagen says an independent repairer can add information free of charge through an online system called erWin. They can print only the information they entered, not the whole history. A retailer cannot see work that stayed outside the network, so keep the invoice as well as asking the repairer to enter the job.

What if I have lost a Volkswagen service book?

Contact a retailer. Volkswagen says a replacement book is stamped Duplicate and does not contain previous stamps. A car from May 2017 onwards may have no physical book, because those records are digital. Ask for a printout of what the retailer holds, and ask the previous keeper for invoices the network cannot see.

How do I know when a Volkswagen is due a service?

Volkswagen describes two regimes. On flexible servicing, the service light comes on when a service is due. On a fixed regime, Volkswagen says the interval is typically about 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. The regime is set on the car. The retailer’s printout, not the model name, shows which one applies.

What if a Volkswagen retailer has no service record?

Volkswagen says a retailer may be unable to access records when the car was serviced outside the network. Ask the seller and the garage named on the invoice. A missing retailer entry is not proof the car was never serviced. An erWin printout only shows what that independent repairer entered.

Can I check Volkswagen service history by registration?

Yes. This UK page uses the registration and does not search by VIN. A Volkswagen retailer may still want the VIN from the V5C or the windscreen if the plate has changed. A private plate does not start a new service record. The registration check is not the manufacturer’s own login.

What can VehicleScore show for a Volkswagen?

VehicleScore cannot guarantee a complete service history for a Volkswagen. When a data provider has supplied them, a report can show service dates, mileage, the provider and a short description of the work. A report with no service records does not prove the vehicle was never serviced. Model guides: Golf and the Polo.
