How to find a registration number from a VIN
The VIN identifies the vehicle. The registration is the UK number plate. Enter the VIN and we look for the plate on the UK records we hold.

Where to find your VIN
Use the full 17 characters. Leave out spaces. The letters I, O and Q do not appear in a VIN.
Windscreen
Look at the lower corner of the windscreen on the driver’s side.
Door frame
Open the driver’s door and check the sticker on the pillar.
Body stamp
On some cars the VIN is stamped into the body, often in the engine bay.
Why can't we find your registration?
A blank result means that VIN is not on a UK record we hold. If you already know the plate, use the car registration check.
Is the VIN on a UK record we hold?
We return a registration only when that VIN is on a UK vehicle record we hold. If it is not there, we do not guess a number plate.
Is the VIN 17 characters?
A VIN is 17 characters and does not use the letters I, O or Q. A shorter code, a longer code, or one of those letters will not match.
Is the vehicle registered in the UK?
This check uses UK vehicle records. A vehicle registered only in another country will not return a UK number plate.
Has the number plate changed?
We show the registration stored against that VIN. A private plate assigned after that record was stored can be a different plate from the one on the car today.
